Alfa Romeo advances its electrification with the 2024 Tonale, the small SUV slots beneath the Stelvio and is aimed to compete against the Audi Q3 and BMW X1. We discuss its plug-in hybrid powertrain, spirited driving performance, and whether or not it delivers Alfa's Italian styling glamour. We also talk about why many plug-in hybrid vehicles start their gasoline engine during strong acceleration even with full battery in EV mode.

  1. Good vid

So, bad ride, meh power, meh mpg, for almost 50 grand. I’ll be keeping my 2015 Ford fusion….rides well, over 40mpg highway, 35 normal. Not a hybrid. I only have 36,000 miles on it. It should last the rest of my life. Also paid for. They can can keep their toenail aka hornet!

  3. Kenneth Anway | July 26, 2023 at 3:22 PM |

Doesn’t seem to have any redeeming qualities.

  4. It’s weird that you don’t plugin a plugin car at night. If it was a EV you would. It’s being lazy that’s it. Plugin is meant to offset gasoline during regular commutes and use gas during long drives.

    • Weird and also disinterested. Maybe the car is so awful that they just don’t care. I don’t know.

  5. Kenneth Anway | July 26, 2023 at 3:25 PM |

Thank you for your honesty! 👍

  6. Is there any chance this alfa won’t break itself and my heart at the same time?

I really want to recommend alfas, but i can’t if they keep doing “alfa things”

  7. I can’t understand why someone would pay the premium for this, over the near-identical Dodge Hornet.

    • For the Alfa badge. Same reason people pay the premium for a GMC Sierra over a Silverado.

    • Most people won’t. Unless Alfa offers stronger incentives. It’s more likely that both will be DOA.

  8. Pacifica PHEV drives in EV mode even at FWY speeds if you’re modest with the touch. Throttle Mashing will cause the ICE to start every time. ICE also starts at random times even when at a standstill and battery is far from empty. Plug it in every time we get home for full recharge in 2 hours or less – thank you Chrysler for putting in a robust onboard charger! Purchase gasoline every 1 to 1.5 months (made it over 2 months once last year).

This car is designed to appeal to the EPA. Not any particular customer.

  10. J Stephens | July 26, 2023 at 4:05 PM |

Why test this vehicle? It is expensive, not particularly innovative, will have very low sales, and this brand has had a long history of being unreliable. Wouldn’t CRs resources be better spent on a more popular model?

  11. Right Lane Hog | July 26, 2023 at 4:24 PM |

When a Dodge Hornet is just not good enough…………

  12. It takes 2 seconds, how do you forget to plug in your PHEV?

    • I know. The plug is literally the best part about the car, and they forgot. These folks just aren’t interested. Maybe the car is so bad it’s literally forgettable. I don’t know.

  13. Great show, meaningless car. The better discussion would be why Alfa Romeo even exists in the US car market.

  14. The Tonale looks like it was designed without space for a front license plate. I wonder if it is sold in Italy where they would put the much, much wider EU front license plate on it there.

  15. Brad Luecke | July 26, 2023 at 5:43 PM |

Why would anybody by this car when the RAV4 Prime PHEV has more electric only range , is less expensive, and is likely to by more reliable.

  16. Mike Nichols | July 26, 2023 at 8:27 PM |

from the side and rear views it looks like a hundred other mas market suv models. the only thing that does differentiate it from the pack of suv clones is the front grill.

  17. Rolando Quezada | July 26, 2023 at 8:51 PM |

I want efficiency with sportiness 🙋‍♂️

Work on your Sound quality- and stop the whining- criticise don’t whine!

  19. 1.3T Alpha Romeo?
Designed to last a couple of days past the end of the warranty.

  20. The jeep compass is horrible. What a great vehicle to build a “premium” vehicle out of
