Fire Chief Julien JohnBaptiste on Monday re-enforced his call for regular inspections of business places in order to cut down the number of fires being reported of late. He made this call after the 3:30 am fire Monday morning destroyed sections of two big business places in Roseau.
The Fire left two families in distress and damaged millions of dollars in goods and property, belonging to the firms of J Astaphans and Acme Garage. The complete warehouse/wholesale of Astaphans was burned to the ground, leaving many workers without a job in an island already plagued with unemployed.
Some of the employees of Astaphans wholesale who had no place to go to work on Monday found themselves re-deployed while those whose vacation was due were sent on leave.
The fire whipped out the entire top floor of Acme Garage which house the dwelling section of the Karam's family of three, offices and the motor vehicle spare parts department.
There were also other dwelling homes close to the Astaphans warehouse which got minor damage, and one almost completely destroyed, leaving the families of that dwelling house homeless.
