ROSEAU Dominica, February 1st, 2012 --  The Australian High Commission presents its compliments to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Commonwealth of Dominica and has the honour to announce the opening for applications of the Australian Agency for international Development (AusAID), Australia Awards, third round of scholarships for study in Australia, commencing January 2013.

The Australian High commission has the honour further to confirm that Australia Awards are offered to the member states of CARICOM, Cuba and the Dominican Republic. Citizens of these countries who fulfil the criteria set out in the applicant profiles list at http://www.trinidadandtobago.embassy.gov.au/ptsp/study.html, may apply for an Australia Award. Applications are assessed alongside all submissions received from the Caribbean region.

Australia Awards in the Caribbean are offered at the Masters and PhD levels. AusAID does not select the applicant's area of study however there are clear priority areas outlined in the information pack to which the Masters or PhD award must relate.

To assist in the search for an appropriate course at an Australian tertiary institution, applicants must visit http://cricos.deewr.gov.au and http://studyinaustralia.gov.au. These websites allow applicants to search for the most appropriate university given their chosen area of study. These sites also provide details of what it is like to study in Australia.

There are several types of Australia Awards available which include:

...the Australian Development Scholarships (ADS)
...the Australian Leadership Awards (ALAS)

...and Endeavour Awards

Applicants are encouraged to visit the website www.ausaid.gov.au/scholar that provides further details of each type of award. Information on how to apply may be found at: http://www.ausaid.gov.au/scholar/ala_apply.cfm.

On-line applications are preferred however hard copy applications may be submitted to the High Commission in Port of Spain. We strongly encourage applicants to apply online at: http://oasis.ausaid.gov.au.

The on-line application process for the 2013 academic year intake opens from 1st February to 30th April 2012. Thus applicants are strongly encouraged to start the process of obtaining all necessary documents.

Dear Editor: As part of the festivities taking place in Dominica this month...
Looking to catch images of Dominica and its beauty? Then keep watching the Thumbs to your right! Dominica lies almost in the centre of the arc of islands known as the Lesser Antilles. This arc extends from the Trinidad-Grenada Passage in the south up to the Anegada Passage between the Virgin islands and Anguilla. These islands of the Lesser Antilles are of volcanic origin.

Following the French attack under La Grange and the suppressions of the Maroons in 1814, Dominica was entering a long period of peace . In 1815 Napoleon was finally overthrown and the threat of French attack on Dominica was over for good. For almost a hundred years the inhabitants had lived in constant fear of invasion and yet, now they were faced with problems no less important than war. The most insistence was slavery.
