Dominica's music

Pat Aaron "De Musician"

Musician
  • Music is so much in this Dominican singer/songwriter/musician's blood; his peers gave him the moniker, "The Musician," As her grew up in Roseau, Commonwealth of Dominica, song writing was his favorite pastime. Today, "The Chief Musician" is his stage name.

Pat Aaron grew up in the capital of the Nature Island where he attended St. Mary's Academy. His favorite subject? No surprise here -- English. Early influences in music were the Mighty Sparrow." he shaped the opinions of the Caribbean in the early years," says Aaron -- Lord Shorty, Chalkdust and Bob Marley among others. Aaron musical style runs the gamut from calypso to reggae.

"As far back I can remember I have been writing songs,'' says Aaron. Even as a 12-year-old, he was sought after by calypsonians in Dominica to write or edit their songs. With the young Musician's shaping of their lyrics, they won national calypso competitions. In those early days, calypsonians like Zeye and Tronada were indebted to Aaron.

Today, others like Hurricane. The 1996 winner of the Caribbean Calypso Competition held in St. Maarten can attest to Aaron's songwriting skills. His sister, Julia, too, has won competitions in Barbados with his songs. Ask Intruder or Third Eye, who, within the last five years, have won road march, crowns, who made them winners, and the resounding response would be the Musician. Mention the name "songwriter" to any Dominican and the first name that comes to mind is very likely to be Pat Aaron.

Some of Dominica's leading artists has interpreted songs written by Aaron, including Gordon Henderson of "Exile One" a Dominican band of international acclaim. "Exile One" too, has played music by Aaron.
