Dominica's Culture
Dominican folk music is a hybrid of African and European elements. The quadrille is an important symbol of French Antillean culture, and is, on Dominica, typically accompanied by a kind of ensemble called a jing ping band. In addition, Dominica's folk tradition includes folk songs called b
Calypso
The songs and music were the backbone of masquerade. The mimicry and redicule of the costumes were matched by the satire of the songs. The words were full of double meaning and innuendo. The calypsonians have carried on the tradition by disguising the true meaning of the lyrics .........more on dominica calypso.

Bro
Rasmo:
You have been as constant as the Northern Star in the struggle for a better Dominica since the 1970s so I respect your question re deevelopment of last week (Dr. Dave Shillingford asked for something similar-so I address this to him and all others). You are man of great cultural attributes. I have known you since our DGS days and on many other fronts. Sadly, I cannot say the same for some of those who now seek our destruction. They are Johnny Come Lately tools of power now arrive to loot and plunder the public till and - by forked tongue - disparage our noble heritage of struggle for the public good. They are intent on turning us into a beggar nation and have the audacity to speak of "imperialist." They sleep in bed with natural resource imperialist who rape our fair country. They are blinded by arrogance, adulation from fawning sycophants and the siren song of power. So blinded by materialism - yet they dare to point fingers at others. My word!
Rasmo,
you are not perfect, of that I am sure. However, I cannot state now that in
all those years I have know you have ever told me an untruth in things
material. You have always sought the truth and a higher purpose by
grapp;ling and struggling with your own conscience. You have always sought to
speak respectfully of others, even where you disagreed. Can we say the same of
our distracted brothers and sisters?
Now
then, why can I not say the same of people who I got to know only yesterday in
the governance of our nation? What is wrong? What has happened to our value
system? Our very culture? Why do we have such a cascade of abject
misdeeds, that has been apologized for in public yet some of our so-called
learned ones seek to sweep beneath the carpet? Why do the young boys
and girls who we have not yet enrolled in nation building, become so deviant and
threatening of our peaceful Dominica? It is to save, rescue and build a peaceful
and better Dominica we struggle.
Do
they not see the perils which confront us in such a course of criminality?
Do they not see the ruin of Mother Africa, and nearby countries, banana
republics etc, by such practices? Lest we seek our destruction as a
nation and people, we must embrace a culture which is productive, meaningful,
productive and true, now! And on that score, we shall be relentless and
uncompromising. We shall seek no truce or parley with that behavior.
It is wrong! And no seawall, roadwork, or cheap t-shirt accompanied by
strong drink and ro ro music shall conceal this cancer to the very
conscience of a nation. Yes, my learned friend "V" in the UK said it
shall work. "De man have skills." Work? For how long? And to whose benefit
and to what useful purpose?
Since
you well know where we stand in concrete achievements in sustainable community
development, not idle chatter e-mails and venomous attack, I refer you to
the note sent to the PM in 2007. There you will see, as always, what our
views on sustainable development have been. I hope that any government
which rules Dominica take due cognizance of it, as it is only by such
Competence,
Loyalty and Integrity
we can build our nation; share far and wide.
Where
you have seen it already re-read it and ask whether this government is serious
where it did none of those things. Instead it engaged in self destructive
behavior and lies to its very own inside the room echelon, supporters,
and cabinet members. Can any serious development proceed in such an
environment? Tell me? Isn't trust, competence, loyalty and integrity not
critical to the success of any enterprise and people?
The
train of progress can be impeded by the boulder in the road.
Dominicans,
vote wisely.
Best
wishes,
GJC

History
The Dominica story was first presented by Lennox Honychurch as a dramatised radio series tracing the origin and development of this often mysterious island from its volcanic formation up to the presented. History has been interwoven with geography, ecology, folklore and social custom to produce a concise and colourful work which is not only vital to our knowledge of Dominica but to Caribbean history as a whole.
