Profile candidates
Mr. Savarin was elected Political Leader of the Dominica Freedom Party on April 20th 1996 following the resignation of Brian Alleyne who had succeeded Dame Eugenia Charles as Political Leader following the 1995 General Election.
Prior to his election to Parliament in 1995, Mr Savarin had served as General Manager of the National Development Corporation, 1993 to 1995; Ambassador of Dominica to the European Union, selected European countries and the United Nations Office in Geneva, 1986 to 1993; Minister Councillor in the Dominica High Commission, London, 1985 to 1986; Minister without Portfolio in the Prime Minister's Office 1983 to 1985; Senator in the House of Assembly 1979 to 1985; General Secretary of the Dominica Civil Service Association 1966 to 1983 and Assistant Master at the Dominica Grammar School, 1963 to 1970.
Mr. Savarin was born in the town of Portsmouth in the Commonwealth of Dominica on 2nd October 1943. He attended the St. John's (Primary) School Portsmouth; the Dominica Grammar School, Roseau; Ruskin College (Oxford) England and pursued studies in Industrial Relations, London, United Kingdom and International Relations (Berlin) West Germany.
Mr. Savarin is married to Clara Savarin nee Etienne and they have three children Carla 18, Hubert 16 and Amanda 10.
Two of the DFP strongest candidates are out of the election 2000 race. Ossie Walsh is off to do law and veteran Charles Maynard said that he had enough of politics. But the party leader is boasting that their replacements are as strong or even stronger. But the election date is set for January 31, 2000, and Roseau South is without a new candidate.
